5 things about Palm Sunday that remind us that Christ is the King (2023)

Palm Sunday is the Sunday before Easter, which begins Holy Week. It is the day we remember and celebrate the day Jesus entered Jerusalem as Savior and King. When Jesus entered the city of Jerusalem riding on a donkey, a large crowd gathered and placed palm branches and their cloaks in the street to treat Jesus royally. Hundreds of people chanted, "Hosanna to the son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"

Palm Sunday is a movable holiday, which means that its date changes each year based on Lent and the vernal equinox. Many churches celebrate Palm Sunday by waving palm branches, singing traditional hymns, and making crosses out of palm leaves. But although this is a triumphal entry, it is Jesus' first step towards his death.

Palm Sunday Bible Story - Triumphant Entry

Mateus 21:1-11 See More- Jesus arrives as king in Jerusalem

As they approached Jerusalem and arrived at Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples and said to them, “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied with her donkey beside her. Untie her and bring her to me. If someone says something to you, say that the Lord needs you and He will send you right away. This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: “Say to the daughter of Zion, 'Behold, your king comes to you meekly, riding on an ass, and on a colt the foal of an ass. '" and they did as Jesus had commanded them. They brought the donkey and the colt and put their covers on them so that Jesus could sit on. The crowd that preceded and followed him shouted, "Hosanna to the son of David!" come in the name of the Lord!" entered Jerusalem, the whole city was moved and asked, "Who is this?" The crowd replied, "This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."

Immediately after Palm Sunday, as we begin this Holy Week, we can be constantly reminded of its importance and value in our lives today. That momentous day in history when Jesus began his journey to the cross.

But maybe in the midst of busy life, right after spring break or with all those thoughts about Easter approaching, the true meaning of Easter can get lost, even without wanting to.

5 Things About Palm Sunday That Remind Us That Christ Is King

1. The Word of God tells us that the people cut palm branches, waved them in the air, and laid them on the ground in front of Jesus as he entered the city. The palm branch represented goodness and victory and was a symbol of the final victory that was soon to be fulfilled over death.

"O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?"1 Kor. 15:55

2. Jesus chose to ride a donkey, which directly fulfilled Old Testament prophecyZac. 9:9🇧🇷 In biblical times, it was common for kings or important figures to arrive in procession mounted on donkeys. The donkey symbolized peace, so those who chose to ride it showed that they came with peaceful intentions. Jesus reminded us even then that he is the Prince of Peace.

Rejoice greatly, daughter Zion! Shout for joy, daughter of Jerusalem. Behold, your king comes to you, righteous and fullsalvationIt is he, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the son of a donkey”.Zac. 9:9

3. When people shouted "Hosanna!" they wept, celebrating Christ as King. This word really means "save now", and although in their own minds they expected an earthly king, God had another way in mind to bring true salvation to all who trust in Him.

"If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved." Rom.10:9

4. The Bible says that Jesus wept over Jerusalem. Amidst the praise of the moment, He knew in His heart that it would not be long before the same people would turn their backs on Him, betray Him, and crucify Him. Their hearts broke with the reality of how much they needed a Savior.

“As he approached Jerusalem and saw the city, he wept over her and said, 'If you, yourself, had known in that day what would bring you peace, but now it is hidden from your eyes.'Lucas 19:41-42

5. Palm Sunday reminds us that Christ's kingdom is far greater than human minds can imagine or project. The man was looking for someone to fight his battles in today's world. However, God had the ultimate plan to send his Son to fight the final battle of death. That's the big reason we're celebrating this week. Because of Christ's ultimate sacrifice, we can be delivered from death.

"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, he will live'."João 11:25

We have a lot to be thankful for this week. The enemy knows this, and you can bet they will do anything to distract us from the true meaning of what this Holy Week is all about. don't let him win

Zechariah 9:9- Be very happy, daughter Zion! Shout out, daughter Jerusalem! Behold, your king comes to you, righteous and victorious, humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt.

João 12:12-19- The next day, the large crowd that had come to the party learned that Jesus was going to Jerusalem. They took palm branches and went to meet him, crying, "Hosanna! "Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" "Blessed be the King of Israel!" Jesus found a donkey and sat on it, as it is written: fear, daughter of Zion: behold, thy king cometh, riding upon a colt.

Lucas 19:11-44- “Go into the city ahead of you, and when you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie him and bring him here. If someone asks you, "Why are you untying him?" tell him, "The Lord needs him." Those who were sent ahead went and found him just as he had told them. As they were untying the donkey, its owners asked, “Why are you untying the donkey?” They replied, "The Lord needs it." They brought him to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the donkey, and Jesus got on. As he went along, people spread their cloaks along the way. When he reached the place where the path descends from the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began to sing with a loud voice for joy, praising God for all the wonders they had seen: “Blessed is the king who, in the name of comes the Lord. !""Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!"

Lord God, I thank you because you are good and your mercy is infinite. Here I am at the beginning of this holy week, this week when your church commemorates the suffering and death of Jesus, and I am distracted by many things. Now fix my eyes on him who comes in his name, on him who opens the gates of justice, on him who answers when we call.

I bless you Lord for illuminating me with your light and sending us your son in human frailty. Walk the way we walk. Open my eyes to see it coming and praise it with a pure heart.
